5 Tips to Better Hair Care

When was the last time you really took care of your hair? I mean from cleanse, condition to styling. Have you felt like you followed all the latest YouTube tutorials and stylists recommendations only to fall dreadfully short? If you answered yes to either question, I have 5 tips at just for you.

1.) Are you washing your hair with Semi or Lukewarm water?

While the hot water may feel soothing, it can actually have a negative effect on your hair stands. Hot water can strip the hair of the nutrients and essential oils needed to grow healthy and in many cases can leave the hair looking and feeling dry and dull. The use of semi or lukewarm water is less abrasive and cleans your hair just as effectively.

2.) Do you have the correct conditioning routine?

When it comes to conditioning, you may be applying the conditioner from scalp to hair ends, but this is actually INCORRECT. You should ONLY be applying conditioner on the mid-lengths to the ends of your hair. Using the conditioner at the root can be the cause of why your aren't seeing the desired volume once styled as this can weigh down the hair. To achieve even distribution with less breakage, try distributing your conditioner through your strands using your fingers (after all they are your best hair care utensil and they are FREE).

3.) Are you using a towel to dry your hair?

Most of us are guilty of wrapping a towel around our heads at the conclusion of washing and conditioning our hair. Hey, that's how our parents and grandparents did it, so it must be correct, right? Wrong, drying the hair with a towel can be very harsh on the hair and in the case of my wavy, curly and coily girls the No. 1 cause of frizz! Set aside that towel and grab an old cotton T-shirt to squeeze or scrunch out excess moisture.

4.) If you are a Curl Queen, are you properly applying your styling products?

If you are unsure, the answer is probably no, but that's okay. I wasn't styling my coils properly at first either. As a Curl Queen, our styling NEEDS to happen when our hair is soaking wet. You want to apply a cream based styling lotion, or hair milk first. Then using a spray bottle (automatic mist spray bottle works the best) for water control, spray hair and then apply a gel or mousse. Its best to work section by section and as you spray the water apply the gel to the sections as you go. From here you can either diffuse or air dry based on time or preference. Which ever you choose, limit manipulation of hair until it's completely dry to reduce frizz.

5.) Are you protecting your hair before you heat style it?

While heat styling your luscious locks can look gorgeous, excessive heat styling can leave your hair badly damaged. You wouldn't go to a hot sunny beach without using SPF to protect your skin, so why would not take the same precautions for your hair? Prior to heat styling, apply a heat protectant on your strands to protect them from dehydration and protein damage.

I thought it important to share theses 5 with you all. If you have questions about these tips or even something that I did not mention, drop a comment below.
